The Ballad of Bill Hubbard …….. Roger Waters

Harry Patch (The Last Tommy) died in July 2009. As the last surviving soldier to have experienced the horrors of the 1st world war trenches , he was 111 years old . Staunchly anti-war , his final years were characterised by a rising public profile , as he finally spoke of the horrors and futility of war . As a machine gunner , he would shoot the Germans legs , rather than kill them. This song is a tribute by Roger Waters to Bill Hubbard ( a young man who didn’t come back from the Somme) , and the memory of his last moments , forever carried by his friend Alf Razzel ( Raz) , who tells the story . !00 million people died in Europe in the 40 years from 1910 …….. to put that into context , we are all horrified that Hitler killed 7 million Jews during the holocaust ( about 1 million per year for about 7 years ) . But wars averaged 2.5 million every year for 40 years , not a figure talked about much . There is no glory in war , and who does it benefit in the end ……………….. only the bankers ………. but thats for another day. For the first time this year there will be no representative from the 1st world war at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, they are consigned to the history books . The world will be a sadder place without them , as war is now glorified thru’ computer games and film . As the Buddha once said ” friendship is the only cure for hatred , the only guarantee of peace. Hatred does not cease by hatred , but only by Love ; this is the eternal rule …

Gilmour is very happy and satisfied with the guitar work on this album by a good friend of his…Jeff Beck. David would have done a splendid job too, but it was not in the cards, laddie. Jeff did just fine, don’t bother yourself with stupid comparisons.

@spinnersthegrinners i was confused by this initially , but now i believe that he was escorted to the trenches from which he was to collect the dead soldiers paybooks.

One thing I’ve never understood: “They picked me up and took me into their trench” – the Germans I presume – yet he then just walks out with his mate. Seems a little odd.
Phenomenal song with an excellent video to match. Kudos my friend.
Peace.

Excellent job. I always wondered where the audio came from for this track. It always struck a chord with me and I almost was going to make a video for it. But I now because you’ve done such a sterling job, I don’t need to. Again EXCELLENT JOB. WELL DONE AND WELL PUT TOGETHER.

If the majority of the people ever were to realize how bad we are LIED to by our governments….I don’t suppose they really want to know anyways. Too many good sales at the mall to occupy our time….

Just beautiful. I confess it brought a tear to me eye.
Roger is one of my heroes, both as a musician and a compassionate and devoted advocate of a better humanity that we could and SHOULD evolve into if we can.
Someday perhaps.

A fitting tribute to a fitting hero from another war and lets honor him by not killing and dieing for nothing that means anything to the likes of you or me.
