Always remember, there are a lot of documentarys made about Barrett, but he has never been involved with it. The fact is has never talked much about it. The fact is that he is never diagnosed on shizofrenia by any doctor. He spend some time in some kind of hospital but doctors determined it was not his home. This shows that many storys about him are fabricated. Maybe it’s better to believe his real family like Syd’s sister.

when you droped acid yourself you probably will know you will never gonna drop a second trip on a bad expierience. You don’t go on stage on a bad expierience. He did have a heavy periode on acid yes, and like “MOBILE513″ wrote, he was surrounded by bad people, but that was after he left the band so those things had nothing to do with the problems between EMI and the band. They just blamed it on that because they didn’t understand Syd’s vision very well.

The fact is Barrett didn’t wanted to be associated with the Floyd anymore. And it was not because of the acid use. It had another reason. They only talk about Syd bad trip experience. He clearly changed his vision on things and it was against all odds for a band that tries to do everything to become famous. Barrett didn’t had love anymore for those kind of things and he didn’t care if it was on stage. You don’t have to research for 25 years to see what realy happend, just let the crap storys out

As for his “strange” behavior, I think it was a combination of tripping hard and screwing with people. He’d drop acid, then get spiked with more acid. Supposedly he was unwittingly getting doped for over a month. I imagine anyone would do some weird shit on that much acid. Then there was the HYGIY? story and Jugband Blues, which suggest that not only was he aware of what people thought of him, but willing to confront and make light of it.

Syd’s trips were nightmares. He was surrounded by people who did shit like spike his tea and lock him in a cupboard when he was on a bad trip. He left for a hotel room, stopped acid and got into Ludes, or Mandies as they called them. A groupie talked about visiting him then, said he’d just stare off in bed all day in a coma. As for Waters, I think it was a combination of guilt and simply not knowing what he was talking about. No one did then, and we barely grasp mental problems now.

@scraleteagle70
Possibly- may I ask like how do you know this info when it isnt commonly available?I knew they shit on him when they gave him the boot and Gilmour mooched in and took over- obviously with Rogers approval, and then the court crap in the 80s was it or 90s?Cant recall though I saw them live in 1986 in Auckland-they had a large inflatable pig fly across the crowd on a wire from the higher part of the natural amphitheatre Western Springs, but it was disappointing

Interesting-I didnt know that he got into opiates, which is what I assume to be painkillers.They are a different kettle of fish and severe withdrawls wouldnt have been too nice-if he had a raging tolerance.Bad trips arent especially nice either(which is why being in the right mood is imperative before one ingests)but as I have said and perhaps know from personal and lengthy experience, he must have been susceptible.I thought Roger was pals with Syd-not a traitor per se-they milk it

Yeah, a lot of poorly researched books were written in the 80/90s that took Roger’s word as fact.. As I see it, Syd appeared to have Autistic tendencies and went through numerous traumatic episodes, including terribly bad trips. He then heavily abused pain killers, which led to his stumbling, distant nature in the 70s. It’s a complex situation with a lot of blame to go around, and “crazy” is an easy, exciting label for people to go to. I think Syd was aware of this and resented it.

My bad Scarleteagle70.I dont like how they blame things on LSD-25 as it is physiologically fine and though life changing, certainly not the cause of psychotic or disturbed states.Its obviously the common myth but I have read and looked into a fair bit about them over the last 25 years, since I have been digging their sounds and dig though coined in the 60s is a phrase I like and use.Must be different sources all quoting Roger then-they went to shit after Syd left I think.

Barrett truly believed in what he did and not only making a profit out of it, he also didn’t played the saint like many artist were doing at that time. That’s the main reason of his behavior. He didn’t had love for fame and big money anymore and it was against all odds for a band that want to become famous so they all blamed it on the acid use. Barrett lost his trust and faith in friends and the musicworld, no wonder he went back to his family.

@mike666nz Syd has never been diagnozed on shizophrenia by any doctor, he spend some time in a hospital and doctors could not realy concloude that he had shizophrenia. Maybe you better start to read again. It is Roger Waters who claims that Barrett was crazy and had shizo. Barrett had a whole othet vision on things and most people didn’t understand him. So they blamed it all on the acid.

Psychedelics only damage those whose brains are predisposed to schitzophrenia- in Syds case everything I have read/gleaned over the decades is that he was diagnosed with paranoid schitzophrenia which started when he was being harrassed by aliens.A common theme is God- the devil and aliens.I know one dude who took a DOM drop(STP), they called them back in 1970, and it triggered a Syd effect which basically rechildified him- heaven is 7 minutes past pluto!
sad but amusing

I don’t believe in mental illness. This is just how some people live their lives. Who are we to judge. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Mental illness is in the eye of the controller.

you can have schizophrenic episodes when you have autism-my son was diagnosed with schizophrenia although it was not noticed that he was autistic-this was all triggered from drugs as well..what a rich tapestry Syd left us, just such a shame he appeared to be alone with his illness and it looked as if he ended up more or less alone unless his sister and family were around for him
